My Sweetheart Quilt
Inspired by the Ohio Star Block and a Valentine card. Made by Wendy Porter.
Requirements: For this quilt, finished size 108cm x 108cm (42 ½" x 42 ½")
Sewing Machine in good working order, Manual and acessories (bring ¼ inch foot).
Rotary cutter, rulers and cutting board.
General sewing kit scissors, pins and threads
Marking pen /pencil and paper
Template plastic
Bondaweb or freezer paper to attach applique hearts (you choose your method.)
Don't forget your Lunch.
Fabric: I used eight fabrics in this quilt, five fabrics for my block design, two extra fabrics for the border and binding, and a different fabric for the backing, but you can decide how many you would like.
You can cut out the basic squares before you come, if you wish to speed up your progress in the class.
Block design
Fabric 1: Plain Light 9 x Squares 4 ½"
Fabric 2: Patterned Light 16 x Squares 4 ½"
Fabric 3: Plain Dark 12 x Squares 5 ¼" cut in half diagonally to give four triangles
Fabric 4: Patterned Dark 6 x Squares 5 ¼" cut half diagonally to give four triangles
Fabric 5: Contrast 6 x Squares 5 ¼" cut half diagonally to give four triangles
I would recommend getting ½ metre of each as this will give you plenty to make your decorative border, applique hearts and room for any errors.
(You will have a bit over on some of the colours, as the smaller amounts can be squeezed from a fat ¼ but getting the border bits out is very tight).
Borders, Binding and Backing
Fabric 1, 2, 3, 4, 5: Decorative border 16 x 2"x 3" rectangles from each fabric.
Fabric 6: Inner border Dark, 4 x 1 ¾ " strips from the width of the bolt (25cm)
Fabric 6: Binding Dark, 5 x 2 ½ " strips from the width of the bolt. (40cm)
Fabric 6: Corners of decorative border 16 x 2"x 3" and 4 x 2 ½" x3" (10cm)
Fabric 7: Outer borders contrast, 4 x 1 7/8" and 4 x 2 3/8" strips from the width of the bolt.(50cm)
Unless you have a directional fabric and then you will need more fabric. i.e. (110cm)
Fabric 8: Backing 130cm
This will be tight on one side as the quilt finished size is 108cm just under the width of the bolt usually 110cm but if you quilt it yourself this should be enough.
Wadding: 130 cm x 130 cm
Opposites Attract

Don't forget your Lunch.
Construction: You will need to make the patchwork panels before you come. As this takes time to make. See details below*
OR You could use an old UFO or another design - it's your choice.
Make up to required size.
The size of the bag can be adjusted to suit what you create.
OR you can make the bag with plain fabrics that you like. See panel size for fabric needed.
We will be quilting the panel, cutting and adding the decorative band around the top and making the handles, adding a lining, and constructing the bag in the class. You should choose at least 3 fabrics for this.
For the panel you can decide how many fabrics you would like.
(I used 3 different shades of batik in my rail fence design.)
*The Panel size you will make at home (before we add the decorative band) measures overall:
Small bag size 79cm x 32cm (31" x 12 ½")
Large bag size 92cm x 38cm (36 ½" x 15")
Or - if done as two separate front and back panels, recommended:as joining together after quilting adds strength to the sides.
Small bag size 39.5cm width x 32cm height (15 ½" x 12 ½")
Large bag size 47cm width x 38cm height (18 1/4" x 14 3/4")
Fabric you will need: for the decorative band and handles to be made in class,
For adding to premade panel or plain fabric:
Cut strips (1 1/8 for small bag) or Cut strips (1 ¼ for large bag)
Fabric 1: (Dark) 30cm (12") across width of the bolt. Cut into 6 strips
Fabric 2: (Medium) 30cm (12") across width of the bolt. Cut into 8 strips
Fabric 3: (Medium) 30cm (12") across width of the bolt. Cut into 8 strips
Fabric for the lining you will need ½ metre
* if making whole bag made in Rail Fence design. See above dimensions. Make this panel before you come.
For my rail fence design whole bag requirements
Cut strips (1 1/8 for small bag) or
Cut strips (1 ¼ for large bag)
Whole bag requirements: Rail fence design all over. (large bag)
Fabric 1: (Dark) 50cm (cut into 10 strips from WOF)
Fabric 2: (Medium) 70cm (cut into 16 strips from WOF)
Fabric 3: (Medium) 70cm (cut into 16 strips from WOF)
You will have enough fabric for making a small purse or pockets and room for any mistakes.
Fabric for the lining you will need ½ metre from WOF
And see requirements list at the top.
