Hardanger 2 part Course
REQUIREMENTS FOR HARDANGER WORKSHOP
General requirements for all designs:
Size 24 tapestry needle
small, sharp, fine-pointed scissors
tacking thread
a magnifier if you need one, as accurate counting of stitches is essential
a notebook and pen
using a frame is not essential, but will help keep your satin stitches even and will also make the holes easier to see! A ring frame is not ideal but any rotary or square frame will be fine.
a pair of tweezers is useful for removing the cut threads.
Charts will be provided to work the small designs for the sampler cushion panel and the requirements given will be sufficient to work all five of the squares. The idea is to spend the first session working on the outline shapes and the second session cutting the threads and learning various filling stitches.
You will need a piece of 22 count Hardanger fabric measuring not less than 10" (25cm) by 15" (38cm).
2 skeins of size 5 pearl or perle cotton to match the background - if using bright white fabric use DMC B5200/Anchor No.1, for antique white use DMC blanc/Anchor 2, and for ivory fabric use DMC/Anchor ecru.
1 ball size 8 pearl or perle in the same colour as your size 5.
It will save time on the day if you mark your fabric before you come into 5" squares by sewing a line of tacking stitches, dividing the fabric in half along the 10" side and in thirds along the 15" side. The designs are worked counting out from the centre, so work further lines of tacking stitches (in a different colour may help) vertically and horizontally through the middle of each 5" square.
If you would prefer to work one of the larger designs, you will need a piece of 22 count Hardanger fabric measuring not less that 10" (25cm) square. You will need one skein of size 5 pearl or perle and one ball of size 8 in your background colour (see above), one skein size 5 in green and one skein each of two complementary colours to work the flowers.
All the designs can be worked on evenweave if you prefer. 27 count Linda fabic works very well. If you would prefer to use evenweave, you will need a piece not less than 8" (20cm) by 12" (30cm) for the sampler cushion panel, and not less than 8" square for the larger designs. Substitute size 8 for size 5, and size 12 for size 8 in the pearl cotton, and you can use stranded cotton for the coloured flowers and leaves.
Introduction to Hardanger
There is a choice of two designs, and the requirements are the same for both.
To work the design you will need a piece of 22 count Hardanger fabric measuring a minimum of approximately 10" (25cm), plus a piece of a similar size to practise on.
Size 5 perle or pearl cotton: 1 skein of green to work the stems and leaves, and 1 skein each of a light and dark colour to work the flowers. The background stiches should be worked in a colour to match your fabric, and again you will need 1 skein. If you choose white, use DMC B5200/Anchor 1, if you choose antique white, use DMC Blanc/Anchor 2, and if you choose cream fabric, use DMC/Anchor Ecru.
Size 8 perle or pearl cotton: I ball in the same colour as your background colour to work the filling stitches.
The models were sewn using antique white fabric, DMC Blanc for the background, DMC 367 (green), DMC 340 (dark lavender) and DMC 210 (light lavender).
Size 24 Tapestry needle
A small pair of very sharp fine-pointed scissors
tacking thread
A pair of tweezers will be useful to remove the cut-away threads.
A frame is optional but will help keep your satin stitches even. A hoop is not really suitable, but any square or rotary frame will be fine.
If you have a magnifier, you may find it useful as accurate counting of threads is essential.
If you wish to work the design on 27/28 count evenweave, you will need a piece of fabric measuring at least 8" (20cm). You will use Size 8 perle for the background and Size 12 to work the filling stitches. As you only need a small amount for the flowers and leaves, these can be worked in stranded cotton.
