Really Fast Raggy Quilt Requirements

It is really helpful if you come to this class with your fabrics pre-cut and ready to stitch

" 8" squares x 96 - 48 for the front, 48 for the back. In my quilt I used one of our I-spy bundles for the front squares and 2 different fabrics for the back [so 24 squares of each]. You get 5 x 8" squares from an 8" strip across the bolt. So it is approx 2.2 Metres for the front and 2.2 Metres for the back.

" Sewing Machine with walking foot.

" Neutral Cotton

" Scissors with a sharp point.

I siggest you get fat quarters of a range of different fabrics for the central block and then we shall plan what other colours you will use in the backgrpound sections and borders.

Kaleidoscope Pinwheel

You will need the following amount of fabric depending on the fabric repeat. To work out the repeat measure the print along one selvedge from the beginning of one motif to the beginning of another, that is your repeat length. You will notice that shorter repeat lengths require less metres. This does not mean that short repeat lengths are your best choice unless expense is your primary concern. As a rule you will get a more effective Kaleidoscope blocks with longer design reoeats (11" or longer). Please note you will have some 'left overs' from this project , you will be able to enlarge your quilt with these if you want to or make 'matching' cushions.

Repeat Fabric for Pinwheels Fabric for background Borders

7" - 10" 2.5 Metres 2 Metres 1 Metre

11" - 14" 3.5 Metres 2 Metres 1 Metre

15" - 20" 5 Metres 2 Metres 1 Metre

21" - 27" 6.75 Metres 2 Metres 1 Metre

over 27" 8 repeats 2 Metres 1 Metre

Choose your fabrics with the following criteria in mind. The main fabric is the one that forms the kaleidoscope effect, it sets the tone for the finished quilt. Large florals and leaf prints work well. . Novelty prints such as animals fish and scenes. Look at the variety within the print itself, a large variety fabric will make an interesting block.

The background fabric should be either plain or an unobtrusive print so that the kaleidoscope really stands out.

Workshop with Gail Lawther
During this workshop you’ll be creating your own Japanese scene - choose either Mount Fuji or Water Garden with Boat to stitch on the day, and you can take the other design away with you to do at home. The designs are created in stained glass patchwork; it’s an ideal introduction to the technique even if you’ve never tried it before, as during the day we’ll cover everything you need to know. Each design is embellished with a different type of folded flower, and I’ve also added some extra embellishment with machine quilting and beads, but of course these are optional.
To ensure that the folded flowers work well; choose firm cotton fabrics; cottons with metallic prints work well, but avoid 100% metallic fabrics as they don’t fold so well. The fabrics I’ve marked with a star need to be cut to these measurements - if you do these before the day of the workshop it means you’ll be ready to get straight on with the creative bit! The other measurements are just minimum requirements; don’t bother to cut them down to the exact size if they’re a bit bigger.
As well as the things below, you’ll need your usual sewing kit of small and large scissors (if you have a pair of special applique scissors, bring them along), pins, needles etc. This is a machine-sewing class; if your machine has an open-toed or clear applique foot, you’ll find that useful; otherwise, just bring your ordinary zigzag foot. If you’re confident with a twin needle (or would like to learn how to use one), it works well on this design; you’ll need a 4mm twin needle, and an extra spool of the thread that matches your bias binding. If you’re not sure where to get hold of a twin needle, I’ll have some with me at the workshop; they cost £3 each.

MOUNT FUJI
Japan’s most famous landmark rises behind a traditional shrine, while spring blossoms decorate the foreground.
Finished size: 21 x 16 1/2in (54 x 42cm)
You will need
* white cotton fabric, 18 x 14in (46 x 35cm); you’ll use this as a foundation to trace and build your design on - it will all be covered except the tip of the mountain, so don’t waste anything fancy!
blue sky fabric, 18 x 12in (46 x 30cm)
two different-coloured print fabrics for the mountain slopes:
top slope 9 x 7in (23 x 18cm)
lower slope 18 x 8in (46 x 20cm)
brown print or plain fabric for the shrine, 13 x 10in (33 x 25cm)
* print fabric for the border, 22 x 17in (56 x 43cm); if the fabric is strongly directional, check that the direction of the print goes the right way. (Note that a fat quarter isn’t quite large enough for this piece.)
* contrasting plain or print fabric for the backing and binding, 23 x 19in (58 x 48) (again, a fat quarter isn’t quite large enough)
* compressed wadding (any flattish wadding will do), 22 x 17in (56 x 43cm)
two toning or contrasting fabrics for the folded flowers, 14 x 9in (36 x 23cm) of each
4yd/3.5m fusible bias binding - I’ve used ivory, but you could use any colour, pale or dark, that works well with your fabrics
sewing threads to match your bias binding, flower fabric and backing/binding fabric
hand or machine quilting threads (optional)
beads to decorate the flowers (optional)
soft pencil (eg 2B)
ruler
piece of thin card or template plastic 9 x 4in (23 x 10cm)

JAPANESE WATER GARDEN
A traditional Japanese boat noses through the waterlilies and the hanging fronds of blossom.
Finished size: 21 x 16 1/2in (54 x 42cm)
You will need
* white cotton fabric, 18 x 14in (46 x 35cm); you’ll use this as a foundation to trace and build your design on - it will all be covered, so don’t waste anything fancy!
blue sky fabric, 18 x 7in (46 x 18cm)
two toning print/batik fabrics for the water, one 18 x 8in (46 x 20cm) piece of each
green print or plain fabric for the waterlilies, 12 x 8in (30 x 20cm)
two toning print fabrics for the boat:
outside of the boat 14 x 4in (35 x 10cm)
inside of the boat 12 x 4in (30 x 10cm)
(if your boat fabrics are strongly directional, bring slightly larger pieces so that you can position the fabric print just where you want it)
* print fabric for the border, 22 x 17in (56 x 43cm); if the fabric is strongly directional, check that the direction of the print goes the right way. (Note that a fat quarter isn’t quite large enough for this piece.)
* contrasting plain or print fabric for the backing and binding, 23 x 19in (58 x 48) (again, a fat quarter isn’t quite large enough for this)
* compressed wadding (any flattish wadding will do), 22 x 17in (56 x 43cm)
two toning or contrasting fabrics for the folded flowers; one fat quarter of each (or a similar amount in scraps) will be plenty
5yd/4.5m fusible bias binding - I’ve used ivory, but you could use any colour, pale or dark, that works well with your fabrics
sewing threads to match your bias binding, flower fabrics and backing/binding fabric
hand or machine quilting threads (optional)
beads to decorate the flowers and water (optional)
soft pencil (eg 2B)
ruler
piece of thin card or template plastic 9 x 4in (23 x 10cm)
