 | Mariners Compass MARINER'S COMPASS
The idea of this class is to design your own Mariner's compass and then to sew it by the foundation method. It is fun and does not take to long to do a simple design. I will hold your hand and guide you through all the steps. If you don't want to design your own I will bring some patterns. You will need to bring:
FABRIC: Half metre of background fabric Four fat quarters of colours for the compass. One should be a fat quarter as this will also be the binding. The others could be fat eights.
We may not need this on the day but you will need it to finish the project. Wadding -Fat quarter. Backing fabric. Calico or similar. 1 Fat quarter
Usual sewing kit. Sewing machine in good working order and instruction book Rotary cutting equipment (Mat, rulers and rotary cutter) Add a quarter ruler and a post card. One flower head pin.

 | Moving on with Cathedral Window Requirements
We will be making an 18" square cushion cover using rectangles. For this you will need the following
Materials for Cathedral Window Cushion " 2m for background fabric and back of cushion. Background fabric should be a medium to fine weight cotton. Avoid very large bold patterns. Interesting effects can be achieved with plaids and small geometric style patterns. " One fat quarter (22" x 20") for windows. Window fabrics can be almost any material. If the fabric is very flimsy or prone to fraying then you will need to back it with fusible interfacing before cutting out. If your background fabric is fussy then a plain window may be best, otherwise choose something with a small pattern or a pattern that fills the window eg a star or flower. " Thread to match the background fabric. " Wadding for four 2¾" x 23" cushion frills. Equipment " Sewing machine with ¼" foot. " Normal sewing kit. " Ruler, mat and rotary cutter or scissors. There are some available to borrow. " Fabric marker pencil and/or vanishing fine marker-violet (disappears over time). " Paper and pencil for notes and ideas. " Tracing paper or A4 size piece of greaseproof paper.
Preparation - optional You can get a little head start by cutting some of your fabric beforehand. If you have time then it would be useful to cut from your 2m of background fabric
o Nine 6½" squares. o Four 9½" squares. o Twelve rectangles (not a rectangular shape to cut though!) using the Creative Grids Cathedral Windows Rectangular Ruler available in the shop. This is a useful ruler to have, but I will be showing you how to make your own ruler template in the lesson if you do not wish to buy it at the moment. o Lunch!

 | My Sweetheart Quilt Inspired by the Ohio Star Block and a Valentine card. Made by Wendy Porter.
Requirements: For this quilt, finished size 108cm x 108cm (42 ½" x 42 ½")
Sewing Machine in good working order, Manual and acessories (bring ¼ inch foot). Rotary cutter, rulers and cutting board. General sewing kit scissors, pins and threads Marking pen /pencil and paper Template plastic Bondaweb or freezer paper to attach applique hearts (you choose your method.)
Don't forget your Lunch.
Fabric: I used eight fabrics in this quilt, five fabrics for my block design, two extra fabrics for the border and binding, and a different fabric for the backing, but you can decide how many you would like.
You can cut out the basic squares before you come, if you wish to speed up your progress in the class.
Block design Fabric 1: Plain Light 9 x Squares 4 ½" Fabric 2: Patterned Light 16 x Squares 4 ½" Fabric 3: Plain Dark 12 x Squares 5 ¼" cut in half diagonally to give four triangles Fabric 4: Patterned Dark 6 x Squares 5 ¼" cut half diagonally to give four triangles Fabric 5: Contrast 6 x Squares 5 ¼" cut half diagonally to give four triangles
I would recommend getting ½ metre of each as this will give you plenty to make your decorative border, applique hearts and room for any errors.
(You will have a bit over on some of the colours, as the smaller amounts can be squeezed from a fat ¼ but getting the border bits out is very tight).
Borders, Binding and Backing
Fabric 1, 2, 3, 4, 5: Decorative border 16 x 2"x 3" rectangles from each fabric. Fabric 6: Inner border Dark, 4 x 1 ¾ " strips from the width of the bolt (25cm) Fabric 6: Binding Dark, 5 x 2 ½ " strips from the width of the bolt. (40cm) Fabric 6: Corners of decorative border 16 x 2"x 3" and 4 x 2 ½" x3" (10cm) Fabric 7: Outer borders contrast, 4 x 1 7/8" and 4 x 2 3/8" strips from the width of the bolt.(50cm) Unless you have a directional fabric and then you will need more fabric. i.e. (110cm) Fabric 8: Backing 130cm
This will be tight on one side as the quilt finished size is 108cm just under the width of the bolt usually 110cm but if you quilt it yourself this should be enough.
Wadding: 130 cm x 130 cm

 | New York Beauty Requirements for New York Beauty You will need at least 3 or 4 fabrics, you may use a lot of some and little of others but they must contrast either in tone or colour. I suggest 1/2 M of each although you will not use all of this in the class it will give you options later. Alternatively several Fat Quarters in contrasting tone / colour would work. This is a foundation pieced technique, extra patterns will be available at printing cost (0.10p per sheet) Sewing machine in good working order and manual, flat foot or applique foot, 1/4" patchwork foot. Usual sewing kit - scissors, pins, seam ripper. (pins - the flower head thin ones are the best) Lunch |
