Precision Piecing
1) Four pieces of fabric as follows:
Light fabric - one fat quarter.
Medium Fabric - one fat quarter.
Dark fabric - one fat quarter.
A Focus fabric - half a metre/yard.
(Please note that a GENEROUS amount of fabric has already been allowed for in case you need to re-cut anything!).
2) Matching fine sewing thread.
3) Sewing machine with slide on table and knee bar if available.
4) Fine sewing machine needles.
5) Scissors for fabric and thread.
6) Rotary cutter and mat. A sharp blade is an advantage!

9) Fine pins.
10) Extension cord.
11) Notebook and pen.
12) Quarter inch sewing machine foot.
13) A fine fabric/straight stitch plate if you have one.
Kit available: Range of detailed colour photocopies and pattern - £2.00 On the day.
Free Motion Feathers
What you need to bring with you:
1) Four 100% cotton quilt sandwiches. Preferably these should be of a pale coloured plain fabric and fat quarter size. The wadding is best if it is 100% cotton, but 80% cotton and 20% polyester wadding is good too. 100% polyester wadding is difficult to use for free-motion work. Please put a few pins to hold the layers together but dont tack these sandwiches.
2) Sewing threads. Philippa prefers 40 weight rayon thread for the top of the machine and 50 weight cotton for the bobbin. If you do not have these bring whatever you have. Bring threads that contrast with your fabric so that you can see what you are sewing!
3) Needles. Bring hand and sewing machine needles. Philippa uses size 70/10 or 65/9 universal or microtex sewing machine needles for the threads mentioned above.
4) Assorted coins, spools or circular templates to draw round.
5) Quilt marking pens and pencils.
6) A few sheets of large size sketch paper. A3 or 11inch x 17inch (or bigger).
7) Scotch/Sellotape.
8) Scissors for paper and thread snipping.
9) Sharp pencils and an eraser.
10) Sewing machine in good working order. You must be able to drop the feed dogs on your machine. Please bring your instruction manual, slide on extension table and your knee bar if you have one. A straight stitch plate is also very useful if available.
12) Free-motion foot. An open-toe type is best if you have it. This foot is essential for this class.
13) Extension cord.
14) A cushion to sit on.
15) Optional extras - warm socks, a flexible (bendy) ruler for drawing curves, a (geometry) compass.
Photocopies available - £2.00 on the day.
Free Motion Quilting and Trapunto Requirements List
Free-motion Machine Quilting & Trapunto
Full Day - All Levels.
Learn how easy and versatile machine trapunto can be, using regular straight stitch and/or free-motion techniques. A fabulous way of adding sculptural dimension to your work. Discuss material and equipment preferences, and gain insight into original and distinctive quilting patterns. After extensive demonstrations students produce a small trapunto sample quilt using the techniques Philippa employs in her own work. Patterns are provided at a small charge.
Supplies:
1. Two quilt sandwiches: one fat quarter size and one 24 square. These should be made with cotton batting (wadding) and the fabric is best if it is a pale colour with any design being subtle.
2. Two 20 square pieces of 80% cotton and 20% polyester batting (or wool or bamboo batting if you already have either of these).
3. A small selection of sewing threads. Please bring threads that are self coloured and threads that contrast with your fabric. Rayon and embroidery polyester both look nice in free-motion work.
4. Scotch or Sellotape.
5. A reel of water soluble thread.
6. Quilters safety pins and straight pins.
7. Small sharp scissors. These are very important for this technique.
8. Quilt marking pencil or pens (washable type).
9. Sewing machine, slide on table and extension cord. Please note that you must be able to drop the feed dogs on your machine to do free-motion work. If you are unsure how to do this please have a look at your manual before class to familiarise yourself with this. If you have a straight stitch plate and a knee bar please bring these too.
10. Sewing machine needles. Please bring a fine needle for use with the water soluble thread.
11. Free-motion foot. The open-toe style is best.
12. Hand sewing needles.
13. Notebook, paper and pens.
Please contact me with any questions. Id be very happy to hear from you.
Photocopies and patterns £3.00 or $5.00.
